Welcome to the website of Breda City Council
The city councillors want to inform you in different ways about how they look after your interests. This site contains further information about the council’s work and precisely what is involved in this kind of work. There is so much more to it than just participating in meetings. It also involves finding ways to get in contact with you to find out what is going on in society. And based on that weighing up what to do next.
For you – as a citizen of Breda – it is important to be aware of the opportunities to get your voice heard. For example, this might be via participation in a meeting of the council committee, by passing on your opinion on a social issue to the councillors when they visit your village or neighbourhood and by making use of the so-called citizens’ initiative.
With its own website, the city council intends to provide you faster and better with quality information in a contemporary manner: in text, vision and sound.

Chairman of Breda City Council
City Council
The city council represents all the residents of Breda and has a total of 39 councillors. Council decisions are of importance to residents, organisations and companies in the city. The council normally takes decisions based on proposals from the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. Only when the council has taken a decision can the Board start their work.
Preparation of the council meeting takes place in one of the various council committees (link naar samenstelling raadscommissies). Representatives of all the political parties sit on these council committees that issue advice to the council. Council committees generally convene in public.
Location: City Hall, Grote Markt, commencing at 7.30 pm. For meeting dates and agendas, please go to calender.

Who does what?
The city council and the Board of Mayor and Aldermen each have their own specific tasks and powers.
The Board of M&A is charged with the day-to-day running and administration of the city. Furthermore, the mayor has his own additional powers in the area of public order and safety.
The city council has three tasks:
Representing the citizens
The citizens of every municipality elect their representatives in the city council every 4 years. Representing the residents is the most important task and also the reason why the council exists.
Setting the framework
The council outlines how and within which limits the city must be administered.
This takes place on various levels: for example, via the council’s own initiative proposals, via proposals from the Board or via the annual framework memorandum containing the policy outlines.
Monitoring
The city council monitors whether the Board and the mayor are running the city correctly and adhering to the council’s decisions. The monitoring process takes place via Question Time, written questions, interpellation debates, the annual report, annual financial statements and executive committee reports.
Contact
